Cream modular sectional sofa with plush, lightly rumpled cushions in a bright, airy living room featuring large windows, neutral decor, and a wooden coffee table.

The cloud sofa is worth buying if you mostly lounge, can spend somewhere between $6,500 and $9,300 on a three-piece, and don’t mind straightening cushions every day. If any of that sounds wrong, a cheaper cloud-style sofa will probably serve you better.

Search for a cloud couch and nearly every result traces back to RH, which launched the original Cloud in 2015, and the comfort claim holds up. Two Apartment Therapy editors tested it in RH’s Manhattan showroom and said it really is that comfortable. The catch sits inside the same cushions that make it feel good, and it’s worth understanding before you pay for it.

Why it feels so good, and why it won’t stay that way

The seat cushions layer down and foam over a spring base. The pocket springs spread your weight more evenly and stop one person’s movement from reaching the next seat, which the Apartment Therapy testers noticed compared with ordinary couches. You sink in, and the sofa holds you there.

Down gets its softness from moving around inside the cushion cover. That same movement means it doesn’t snap back when you stand up. The testers found less bounce-back than on any other RH sofa they tried and said you’ll need regular fluffing to keep it looking tidy.

I’d treat that as the price of the feeling rather than a flaw, because you can’t have one without the other. If straightening cushions before guests arrive sounds like a chore you’ll resent by month three, no review will talk you out of that.

Getting up is the other thing to test. The Cloud is deep (the testers list 40 and 44 inch options) and soft, and soft deep seats ask more of your legs when you stand. Sit on one for twenty minutes in a showroom, then stand without pushing off with your hands. If you have sore knees or hips, or older relatives who visit, that test matters more than any rating.

One fact complicates the whole story. RH sells a sofa that never needs fluffing. The Bella has a pocket spring core and Italian foam of varying density, and the testers said its cushions keep their shape. It’s firmer, which is exactly the trade you’d expect.

Cloud sofa pros and cons

On the plus side, the sit is relaxed, and the customization is huge: three arm styles and 184 fabrics and colors, according to the same testers (many fabrics are performance grade, which helps with spills). It’s modular, and RH sofas carry a lifetime guarantee. The testers called it a forever couch for anyone willing to splurge.

On the other side sit the price and the daily fluffing, plus a low, loose shape that suits movie nights better than upright conversation. The Track Arm version is about 5 inches taller than the original Cloud and gives a more upright sit, so if you want the look without the slouch, ask to try that one.

Who should skip it

Anyone who plans to work from the sofa with a laptop. A deep, soft seat pulls you backward, and a laptop on your knees wants the opposite. That’s my experience of deep sofas generally, not a tested finding, so sit and see.

Households that need a pale sofa to stay pale should also hesitate, since light fabrics and a heavy-use couch rarely end well. If that’s you, the washable-cover options in the table below solve more of the problem than any premium fabric will.

And if you’re buying mainly because the sofa photographs well, spend the difference on a firmer sofa and nice lighting.

What it costs, and why the number keeps changing

Apartment Therapy listed the Cloud Modular Track Arm 3-Piece Sofa at $9,295, or $6,500 at member pricing. RH shows both prices on its site, and members get 30% off in exchange for an annual fee. The testers wouldn’t recommend a membership unless you’re a designer or buying a lot of furniture, though a purchase this size may change that math for you.

Other roundups quote different starting points. Dupe.com’s 2026 comparison puts a standard three-piece at $8,130 regular and about $4,819 for members. Same sofa family, different arms and fabrics, different bill. Check the live configuration page on the day you buy, because prices here move.

Size is the other cost. The testers list lengths of 125.5 and 134.5 inches, so plan on a wall of roughly 11 feet. Measure twice. A sofa this big has a way of making a living room look like a showroom for one sofa.

Cloud sofa alternatives that cost less

The table below comes from Dupe.com’s comparison of spec sheets. That site earns affiliate commissions and didn’t lab-test anything, so use it as a shortlist and confirm details on each brand’s page.

SofaApprox. priceFillWashable coversNotes
7th Avenue modular$2,950 and upDown alternative, memory foamYesLifetime frame warranty, firmer sit
Albany Park Kova$3,042 and upMicrofiber over foamYes29 inch seat, 20% restocking fee
Sundays Movie Night$2,860Feather-fibre blend over foamYes30 or 36 inch seat, 30-day returns
Valyou Feathers$1,899.95Duck feather blendYes31 inch seat, no free warranty
World Market Brynn$1,299FeatherNo30.5 inch seat, spot clean only

My read: if you want the feather sink at a lower price, Sundays and Valyou are the closest on paper. If kids or pets will use the couch hard, 7th Avenue’s firmer fill and frame warranty suit that better, and you lose the fluffing problem along the way.

Albany Park’s restocking fee is worth noticing before you order a 122 inch sofa you can’t test. At the bottom of the range, a Walmart chenille cloud sofa runs around $490, with sponge fill and a warranty of about a year that varies by seller. It gets the look right and not much else, so I’d only buy it for a rental or a guest room.

Quick answers

Does a cloud sofa really need fluffing? Feather and down models do, daily or close to it. Foam and spring models like RH’s Bella or 7th Avenue’s blend mostly don’t, at the cost of a firmer feel.

Can you wash the covers? On the alternatives above, most can come off and go in the machine, except World Market’s Brynn. RH’s own Lugano has removable, washable components, per Apartment Therapy, though it isn’t a Cloud and costs more.

Is it good for a small room? Not really. Even the shorter RH Cloud runs 125.5 inches, so a loveseat or a two-piece module is the realistic version in an apartment.

Before you order

Tape the sofa’s footprint on your floor (126 or 135 inches long, 40 or 44 deep) and live with the outline for a weekend. Then sit on a real one for twenty minutes, stand up without using your hands, and get the fill type and the return fee confirmed in writing.
